Kicking off my #Silent4Sneak Project for Autism Awareness Month!
#AutismAwarenessMonth is here again.
When we were first diagnosed, I used to go all out to spread awareness / acceptance for my daughter. I wore the T-shirts, I "lit it up blue", I posted daily about ANYTHING related to autism in order to spread awareness; I did it all. Doing these things made me feel good at the time, but I still felt like it wasn't enough. Nine years later, I feel that what I am doing in my community gives me a better sense of purpose on this journey. I want to do more. This year, I am spreading awareness in a way that hits closest to home for me...
Sneak (my daughter) lives with nonverbal autism. Throughout the month of April, I too will go nonverbal - just as she lives daily. The obvious difference is that I can pick and choose when I go nonverbal while she cannot. During this time, I hope to learn, as well as teach others! I will share my experience here!
I am allowing myself to use the Tobii Dynavox app that Sneak uses, along with gestures and sign language. This is tough, but I'm going for the full 24 hours. Saturdays are the busiest day of the week for me, and I am not altering anything. All pre-scheduled appointments will go on as planned.
Check back often for the footage.
