Walk One Day In Our Shoes... As I polish my daughter's nails while she sleeps...
Yes - I have to wait until "Sneak" falls asleep in order to polish/cut her nails. Something as simple as grooming nails is rather difficult for "Sneak" to handle (while awake). She doesn't understand the concept of holding her hands still while I clip / polish her nails. She'd also want to touch her nails as soon as she feels the polish on them. At that point, you can forget about a 2nd coating. If I were to come toward her with nail clippers while she was awake...she would run far and fast away from me. So- like a Ninja, I tiptoe into her bedroom while she sleeps to do this. "Why bother?" You ask? Well, autism aside, she is truly an average 10-year-old girl! She loves to see me polishing "Tap's" fingers/toes. ("Tap" is her 5 year old Neuro-Typical sister. Neuro-Typical means that she is not on the autism spectrum. I don't use the term "normal" because - come on now - NONE of us are "normal"!) "Sneak" watches and is engaged in the process. She also likes the end result. So - I go ahead and do it for her because it's little things like this that make us happy. Besides...who DOESN'T like pretty nails?
~Sincerely,
Pump
